Killing a member of your own species makes you go feral, so while Humans have little warfare, inter-species cooperation is much harder. The worldbuilding balances between "Exactly as horrid as a physics-enforced monarchy and grindfest would be" and "Hey cool, a world that's a game", with a lot of cool little details. The story does a great job building a world where incarnates from other worlds are common and exploitationists are a known class (So much of the low hanging fruit has been picked) while still giving room (and reasonable explanation) for the Main Character to find new exploits. The MC gets isekai'd into a LitRPG world, but gets stuck as a farmer and is desperate to get into any other class however, he can only choose a new class upon reaching level 100, which is uncommon to do in a lifetime. Several months ago someone rec'd Oh, Great! I was Reincarnated as a Farmer.

Silas, Nicko, and Maxie then come to visit Jenna in the tower. Marcia saves Boy 412, a mysterious boy in the Young Army, outside the Wizard Tower from freezing to death, and takes him with them to her room in the tower. Marcia takes Jenna away to protect her from an Assassin. At which point, Marcia also reveals Jenna as the previous Queen's daughter. The story revolves around the events of the time ten years after this incident, starting when Marcia comes to take Jenna in her to protection to stop her from being assassinated. Silas names the baby girl Jenna and raises the child and protects her like his own child. Just as he is out to enter his house, the matron midwife runs out carrying his newborn son Septimus Heap (who has been predicted to have extraordinary powers as he is the seventh son of a seventh son) wrapped in cloth and pronouncing him dead. He meets her in an alley way before he gets back and she tells him to keep the baby he found, raise her as his own and if anyone asks, acknowledge her as his daughter. Upon returning to a castle, he learns about the succession of Marcia Overstrand as ExtraOrdinary Wizard. He hides her in his cloak and takes her with him. Just outside the castle Silas finds an infant baby girl with violet eyes, stranded in the snow, and wrapped in a blanket. Here, we find Silas Heap trudging through the snow with some herbal medicines for his wife Sarah Heap. The book begins outside of The Castle, in The Ramblings. Willa is from a formerly very wealthy family who used to be very prominent in the town. Rachael has fallen in love with a local boy and has set up a small cafe within Willa’s store where she’s making a study of what soft of coffee people drink and what it says about their personalties. She leads a fairly quiet life, keeping to herself and socialising mostly only with a 22yo traveler named Rachael. The death of her father and inheriting his house brought her back to the small town she grew up in, to be close to her grandmother who is now in a nursing home suffering dementia. After a wild teenage stage where she was known as the Joker for pulling practical jokes at her high school, she left for college, flunking out before she could graduate. Willa Jackson runs a sporting goods store in her hometown of Walls of Water, North Carolina. I’m still thinking about all the different themes in this story. There’s a bit of a mystery too that will keep you guessing. The premise for Black Cake is quiet in many ways and also quite fascinating. While the novels are very different they share a couple things in common (and yes, one being that both of those are Read With Jenna Book Club selections) but also the writing for the novels are both vivid, insightful and impactful. Prior to Black Cake, I read The School for Good Mothers by Jessamine Chan-a exceptional story that focused on motherhood. (For more of my 2022 book club picks, check out my full list here). Black Cake is one of those novels, which is of the reasons I selected it as a must-read book club selection for 2022. As usual, my TBR is out of control! Can anyone relate? But as much as I want to read as many books as possible each month, some books require more time to spend with. An Alex and John.Īs Dom and Alex investigate Kage’s disappearance we learn so much more about Hollywood, understood his motivations and began to forgive him. The quiet, soft, hand holding, fluttering kisses, and gentle stroking… that filled my heart full of fear and doubt and stupid ideas about keeping him. Though he is still keeping those damn secrets from Dom, about Dom, and I’m just wondering what consequences those secrets (lies by omission?) might herald. In Truth or Dare, we get to see a much less put together side of Kempthorne, a softer, more vulnerable aspect of him. Dom has always been up there with Caleb, Ace Dante, Severn and Lysander but until this book, Alex hadn’t quite won my heart. It’s taken a while, but Dom and Alex have finally become my very favourite Ariana Nash couple, sorry but step aside Eroan and Lysander. I was a card castle inside, a swift breeze away from collapse.
